Abstract: Biocarbon materials are carbonaceous solids derived from biomass and organic waste through thermochemical conversion at a limited O2 condition. The use of biocarbon in energy and environmental applications is a key strategy for replacing conventional fossil-based carbon materials while offering additional benefits of circularity and sustainability. One application of biocarbon materials is their use as adsorbents for CO2 capture, aiming to replace costly and energy-intensive amine-based wet scrubber. Another application is their conversion into biocomposite materials for wastewater treatment. Additionally, biocarbon can serve as a fuel substitute in power plants to reduce coal consumption for power generation. With an appropriate modification techniques, carbon materials derived from low-value biomass and organic waste can be repurposed into valuable materials for energy and environmental applications.
CLISA is the first multi-institutional training program in Canada towards climate smart agriculture to help address the need for HQPs who possess appropriate knowledge and expertise in climate change, precision agriculture, water and soil management, sustainable food production and food value chains, and climate-smart financing and policies to promote the development and application of innovative technologies and strategies in Canadian farming practices.
